MALTA'S small but busy maritime legal sector it is home to the International Maritime Organisation's International Maritime Law Institute has been in the thick of it during the EU accession.

After a lengthy period adjusting local legislation to the demands of Brussels, the country's legal minds are still fine tuning certain aspects of the law to suit EU tastes.

Ann Fenech, head of the maritime litigation department at Fenech ' Fenech Advocates, says there has recently been a plethora of subsidiary legislation related to merchant shipping.

'The directorate of merchant shipping has been extremely busy all year bringing into force various regulations effecting vessels flying the Maltese flag,' she says.
