SECURITY issues have become a top priority for Malta's maritime chiefs.

As well as protecting the good name of the Maltese flag, the island is now the southern gateway to the European Union and a potential target for thousands of illegal immigrants making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean seeking a better life.

Malta and Italy are among those now urging the EU to lift remaining sanctions on Libya to enable Tripoli to buy much needed equipment to fight the flood of illegal immigrants that have left the shores of North Africa in recent years.

It follows a severe embarrassment for Malta when the Italian government asked the island to take back nearly a hundred illegal immigrants who, it insists, were re-routed to Sicily. The growing problem is unlikely to go away soon.

Despite efforts to improve security measures, the US Coast Guard also announced in September that Maltese-registered ships would be boarded and inspected more often than most others when they enter US ports.

The measures are being taken because the vessels have lower than average compliance with new international port security standards, claims the Coast Guard.
