NOT everyone in Malta owns a yacht, but even for those that do not the sea is a way of life.
As well as the fabulous seafood available at the traditional restaurants, the coast offers a whole array of activities for holidaymakers from the leisurely to the frenetic. It is one of the things that has made Malta a holiday hotspot.
Not surprisingly, the island is now being positioned by the authorities as a potential hub for the region's cruise industry. The Malta Cruise Network, founded last December by the main service providers in the industry, is leading the charge.
Key participants, such as Viset's Valletta Waterfront, the Malta Tourism Authority, Malta International Airport, the Malta Shipyards and Malta Maritime Authority, took part at this year's Seatrade Cruise Convention in Florida. Among the initiatives to attract more passengers is the 'Cruise and Fly' concept.
At present there are four cruise services using Valletta to collect passengers. These include the Melody operated by MSC, the Flamenco and the Costa Tropicale while the Seawing is using Malta as its home port and is also offering cabins to Maltese travellers.
Valletta is also an important site for ferry traffic, with ships heading primarily for various Italian ports.
