Byline: Containership giant puts weight behind Germanischer Lloyd initiative in combating heavy weather problems, writes Christopher Mayer in Hamburg
LEADING containership operator Hapag-Lloyd intends to implement Germanischer Lloyd's Shipboard Routing Assistance System on a number of its larger vessels following successful testing on two Costamare ships, the German class society revealed yesterday.
Work on board the 7,500 teu Hamburg Express is under way and installation is scheduled for the five 8,600 teu capacity vessels being built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
The new system, developed in co-operation with the Dutch consultancy Amarcon, is designed to assist ships' officers in reacting promptly to heavy weather and, when necessary, sailing around it.
Seaway data measured on board ship is combined with loading information to facilitate the continuous calculation of the vessel's reaction to waves.
'Through the systematic evaluation of waves, winds and currents and their effect on the vessel, potential risks can be detected in good time so that adequate counter-measures can be initiated if need be,' the society stated.
