ER SCHIFFAHRT is looking for more than 470 masters and officers to man its new ships coming into operation until 2007, writes Katrin Berkenkopf.
However, unlike many other owners the company, which belongs to Erck Rickmers, the company does not have many problems finding these people, said Albert Schumacher, chief executive of ER Schiffahrt.
Two years ago, the company was the first owner to present itself to potential job candidates at the SMM in Hamburg. And this year it has come back because last time was a real success. Ten people were employed directly during the trade fair, and many more afterwards, Mr Schumacher recalled.
He underlines that ER Schiffahrt, which was set up in 1998, has always put great emphasis on training in contrast to many other shipowners and managers. Every ship hosts two to three trainees. At the moment, that adds up to about 70, of which about half are German.
ER Schiffahrt currently has a fleet of 45 ships, with another 31 on order or under construction.
Constant training is an important factor in competing with other tramp owners over charterers, Mr Schumacher said though rather indirectly. Vessel performance and operating costs are after all at least partly determined by the crew. 'The benchmark is our performance,' he added.
