Michael O'Brien, seaman on board the steamship Longhirst , lying in Granton Harbour, pleaded guilty at the diet of Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Thursday to having fraudulently altered in his discharge certificate the word 'trimmer' in the rating column to 'AB' and also in the second charge of altering the certificate the letters 'OS' to the letters 'AB'.

An agent said accused was 36 years of age and had been at sea practically all his life.

He was an able-bodied seaman but, being unable to get a berth, he shipped as a coal trimmer and altered his certificate accordingly.

Following upon that, he got a position as an ordinary sailor but, having been an AB before, he wished to become one again.

The Sheriff said it was a difficult case to deal with. He could quite understand what impelled the man to make alteration on his certificate.
