Byline: CATS admits financial difficulties; it also claims to be 'diligently working' to restore services, writes Rajesh Joshi
A US federal judge has ordered the arrest of the fast ferry The Spirit of Ontario 1 in the Great Lakes port of Rochester after Amerada Hess filed a suit claiming $372,868 in unpaid bunker bills.
US District Judge Michael Telesca has ordered the US Marshal to ensure that the ferry stays in port until the case is resolved.
The Amerada Hess suit demands a sale of the fast ferry, nicknamed The Breeze, to settle the firm's maritime lien.
The new twin-hulled catamaran has been in service since June, running a service across Lake Ontario between Rochester and Toronto and carrying a reported 140,000 passengers. However, service has been suspended since Sept. 8 after operator Canadian American Transportation Systems admitted to financial difficulties.
A recorded message on the company's phone number says the Toronto marketing and sales office has closed as of Sept. 22, and refunds would be provided.
