Byline: Janet Porter in Hong Kong
HONG Kong shipowners and seafarers have added their voice to worldwide calls for fewer restrictions on crew shore leave.
Representatives from the Hong Kong Shipowners Association and the Hong Kong Seafarers' Coordination Committee yesterday presented a letter to James Keith, the US consul general in Hong Kong, setting out the problems that are being caused by tighter maritime security, particularly in the US.
The letter explained that shore leave for seafarers in foreign ports after possibly several weeks at sea 'is vital to ensure their well-being and welfare,' the two organisations told Mr Keith.
Restrictions on shore leave are becoming a major issue for seafarers, said Arthur Bowring, managing director of the shipowners association.
'We hope this campaign will help the US government to realise that its actions in abolishing crew list visas and requiring personal interviews to obtain visas are creating huge practical difficulties as well as sending negative signals to other governments.'
