The Australian National University appears to have lost $22 million in federal funding over the next three years - alleging either a massive administrative bungle or Howard Government ''payback'' over being outspoken on issues such as university industrial relations reform and the Free Trade Agreement.Vice-Chancellor Ian Chubb has written to senior academics within the ANU to warn that future budgets might have to reflect the $22 million cut, despite him having appealed directly to Prime Minister John Howard and Education Minister Brendan Nelson.
The missing money relates to a 2.5 per cent Commonwealth pay rise tied to universities adhering to governance and industrial relations protocols.
Professor Chubb was the first vice-chancellor to publicly condemn the protocols last year and they were eventually watered down by the Government in order for it to get its higher education reforms through the Senate.
