Meninga manoeuvre Lawyers for former Australian rugby league Test captain and former Raiders captain Mal Meninga made a last ditch attempt yesterday to stop his trial on assault charges over a pub brawl last year. Meninga, 44, appeared briefly at the ACT Supreme Court for a directions hearing, where his barrister, John Purnell, SC, made further submissions to the Director of Public Prosecutions. The DPP now has six weeks to consider the submissions. Earlier this month, Magistrate Grant Lalor ordered Meninga to stand trial on charges of assault and assault occasioning bodily harm. Meninga pleaded not guilty to punching 41-year-old Grant Richard Hurley outside a Canberra pub in the early hours of June 29 last year.

Forged licences seized A 17-year-old Canberra youth will face court next month after allegedly creating fake driver's licences on his home computer. The youth's operation was discovered after six forged licences were seized by security staff at a number of Canberra nightclubs. It is alleged the college student made the licences on his home computer and sold them to school friends so they could get into nightclubs. Police traced the seized IDs back to the youth, discovering the licences had been generated from the template of a valid licence and then altered using imaging software. ''The licences were of sufficient quality to be used for a number of dishonest purposes,'' an ACT police spokesperson said.

Wrestler to be tried A former Albanian national wrestler was yesterday committed to stand trial in the ACT Supreme Court over allegations he cultivated several hydroponic cannabis crops in rented houses in Canberra. Fatos Rama, 25, of Narrabundah, was arrested twice during July and charged with growing the crops in houses in Macgregor, Torrens, Garran and Page and with causing substantial damage to all four residences. More than 200kg of cannabis was seized from two of the houses. The ACT Magistrates Court has been told that Mr Rama came to Australia with the Albanian wrestling team in 1996, stayed, and finished second in the Australian titles in 2002.
