(From Canberra Times)
ACT private hospitals had the capacity to treat more older patients but heads of those facilities believed the ''devil is in the detail'' of Labor's $2.9 billion plan, they said yesterday.
Calvary Hospital chief executive Robert Cusack, and John James Memorial Private Hospital chief executive Phil Lowen, conditionally supported Medicare Gold yesterday.
Under Labor's plan, the Commonwealth will cover the cost of treating patients aged 75 or older in public and private hospitals.
ACT Health Minister Simon Corbell said the scheme would free $53 million to cut elective surgery waiting lists and would help to improve services at ACT public hospitals.
Patients aged 75 or older accounted for $1 in every $5 spent on inpatient care at Canberra and Calvary public hospitals.
NSW Health Minister Morris Iemma said more than 10,000 patients waiting for elective surgery in public hospitals would benefit from the scheme. Medicare Gold could be accessed by 123 patients in the queue for surgery at Batemans Bay, 51 at Bega, 80 at Goulburn and three at Queanbeyan hospitals.
