The Coalition stepped up its criticism of the Labor Party's plan for free hospital care for older Australians yesterday, but the attack was undermined by the plan's architect.
Prime Minister John Howard described the plan as a hoax, but head of Catholic Health Australia Francis Sullivan revealed Health Minister Tony Abbott had reacted favourably when told about the plan privately.
''We've had discussions with both sides and, frankly, both sides gave us very good soundings,'' Mr Sullivan said.
''I was optimistic, and the ideal would have been on the same day at the same time two people saying the same thing; but it didn't happen.'' Mr Sullivan's plan for free and immediate hospital treatment for Australians aged 75 years and over was embraced by Opposition Leader Mark Latham, who announced it as Labor policy on Wednesday.
It would require massive spending from July 2006 to fund 1000 doctors, 1800 nurses and thousands of beds, creating a boon for private hospitals.
Mr Latham went on a media blitz yesterday to sell the policy, badged as Medicare Gold, promising elderly patients would have the doctor of their choice as well as a private hospital room in most cases.
