The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband, by Debbie Isitt. Directed by Peter Nettell. Monkey Mountain Productions. The Street Theatre. September 29-October 2.
Visions of Sweeney Todd swim up with this one. It's a comedy loaded with metaphor and done by Monkey Mountain with logic and elegance.
Kenneth (Paul Weingott) is an ageing English Elvis fan, complete with the early Elvis outfit and hairdo, who has replaced Hilary, his wife of 19 years (Olivia Brown), with the traditional younger model, Laura (Lisa Adam).
Why they have chosen to have their third anniversary dinner at Hilary's place is a puzzle until the piece cunningly backtracks to show the disintegration of both marriages.
Hilary can cook, Laura cannot. Neither can Kenneth but he does love to eat.
It's not all quite as simple as that but these differences form the core of this amusing 90-minute play.
