(From Canberra Times)
V OLVO has announced a 4.4-litre V8 engine for its hot-selling XC90 SUV but Australian buyers are not in the company's sights - at least not for a while.
Initially the 232kW engine - Volvo's first V8 - will be available only to left-hand-drive markets and most will find their way to North American owners, who already take about 60 per cent of all XC90s. The XC90 V8 project was started in the late 1990s - before Ford's involvement in Volvo - and considering the packaging of the engine and the development of the vehicle's new six-speed automatic, it's a significant achievement.
The new V8 produces 232kW and its torque is a deadly serious 440Nm at 3900rpm, with 370Nm of that available at about 2000rpm. Engine idle speed is 1250rpm.
Acceleration from standstill to 100km/h takes 7.0sec and fuel consumption is estimated at 13.0-litres/100km. Top speed is limited to 210km/h. Volvo's Australian management has been lobbying Sweden for nearly two years to get its hands on the XC90 V8.
As Volvo spokesman Todd Hallenbeck says, it's no secret that V8-power in the luxury SUV segment is important.
''Right-hand-drive was not considered initially because Volvo did not have the engineering resources to develop it simultaneously with left-hand-drive,'' the spokesman said.
