I T WAS back in 1996 that the first-generation SLKs were launched and since then, more than 308,000 drivers around the world have put one in their garage.
Now it's the latest-incarnation's turn to start Australian two-seater motoring enthusiasts' hearts pumping with the launch of the new SLK 200 Kompressor and SLK 350. A cheque for $83,800 will get you behind the wheel of the entry-level six-speed manual 120kW SLK200 and $109,400 will get you into the manual SLK 350 with its 24-valve V6. With the standard five-speed automatic transmission, the 200 Kompressor is priced at $86,900 while the 350 - with the remarkable seven- speed automatic box - is $112,900.
But if you want a really serious SLK - and you have a lazy $160,000 or so lying around - the 5.5-litre V8 55 AMG with 265kW will be here in the second quarter of next year. The only problem for new SLK buyers who are yet to get in the queue is that from now until the end of this year, Mercedes-Benz Australia will receive 350 SLKs from the factory ... and all are already ordered.
