(From Canberra Times)
V OLKSWAGEN Golf, Generation 5, has just hit the roads of Australia so it's a good time to take a look at the older versions to see how they stand up as used cars.
These are medium-sized cars that, like all cars, have grown in size over the years. Golf is a solid machine that's pleasant to drive and comes with a good reputation for reliability and long life.
These German cars offer good interior space. Handling is excellent, good steering feel giving lots of handy feedback to let you get involved in what the car is doing, and plenty of road grip even when pushed hard.
The buyer who needs a family car, but who enjoys driving, will find the Golf goes a long way towards meeting these conflicting needs.
These cars remain comfortable even on rough bush roads.
Golf is a three- or five-door door hatchback. The four-door sedan was called the Vento from 1995 to early 1997 then pulled off the Australian market for a while. Then it came back as the VW Bora towards the end of 1999.
