Statistics might not be all that matter at the AFL Draft Camp, but breaking a decade-old record is a good way to get noticed by AFL clubs.
Soon after breaking Western Bulldogs player Steven Koops' 1995 record for the 20 metre sprint. 18-year-old Danyle Pearce found himself sitting down talking to Sydney Swans coach Paul Roos.
Pearce completed the 20 metres in less than 2.79 seconds. He also had the second best score in the running vertical jump, leaping 96cm off the ground, knocking Fremantle's Dion Woods into third on the all time list.
One reason to explain Pearce's speed could be his rush to play AFL, just like his idols Peter Mateira, Michael Long and Andrew McLeod.
''As soon as I can,'' Pearce said when asked when he wanted to play footy for a living.
''I want to get the draft out of the way and hopefully get drafted. As soon as I can start determining for myself when I can get out there and play, and show them what I can do, I want to get started ASAP.'' At just 178cm and 72kg Pearce knows he needs to work on increasing his strength. Up until now he has been able to rely on his speed to compensate for lack of size but he knows the AFL is a different kettle of fish.
