Indirectly Speaking / Social interaction with non-Japanese

Mike Guest Special to The Daily Yomiuri

Yomiuri

This month, rather than dealing with actual conversation content I will present eight do's and don'ts of social interaction with non-Japanese. Every language has set formulas for speech and these are an integral part of mastering any language. For example, non-Japanese cannot get by in Japan without using formulaic greeting phrases like, "Yoroshiku onegai shimasu," "Itterasshai/Ittekimasu," "Tadaima/Okaeri nasai," etc.
