Mike Guest Special to The Daily Yomiuri
Yomiuri
This month, rather than dealing with actual conversation content I will present eight do's and don'ts of social interaction with non-Japanese. Although readers of this column may be too sophisticated to make these gaffes, teachers might find these worthwhile to point out to younger learners or those not yet experienced in internationalized settings.

Every language has set formulas for speech and these are an integral part of mastering any language. For example, non-Japanese cannot get by in Japan without using formulaic greeting phrases like, "Yoroshiku onegai shimasu," "Itterasshai/Ittekimasu," "Tadaima/Okaeri nasai," etc.
