Takebe: No letting up on postal privatization

Yomiuri

In an interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun shortly after his appointment as secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party, Tsutomu Takebe emphasized that postal privatization would be the core policy of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's reshuffled Cabinet. The following are excerpts from the interview:

How do you plan to take forward discussions on the privatization of Japan Post?

The LDP's manifesto clearly states that the party will decide the specifics of the privatization plan by the autumn of 2004, submit bills to the ordinary diet session in 2005 and privatize Japan Post in April 2007. The LDP Diet members were elected based on the manifesto and privatization is at the heart of that document.

We'll naturally have discussions on how to take forward privatization and reform, but there is no objection to the principle of privatization in the party. We should make every effort to publicize our discussions and win support from the general public.
