IN THE NEWS / Astronaut blasts off for France to teach space cadets
Kyoko Takita Yomiuri Shimbun Staff Writer

After working out of Houston for nearly 20 years, Chiaki Mukai, 52, will leave Texas behind next month and land as a teacher at the International Space University in Strasbourg, France--the only university in the world to specialize in space studies.
A two-time astronaut and a heart surgeon, Mukai will be teaching space medicine for the next three years to 50 cadets from 30 countries who are taking on the burden of the future of space development.
In February 2003--when the Space Shuttle Columbia broke up in midair, killing all seven astronauts aboard--Mukai was the deputy chief in charge of ground support for scientific experiments on the shuttle.
