Typhoon death toll rises to 20

Yomiuri

Typhoon No. 21, which caused landslides in Shikoku, Kinki and other regions Wednesday before sweeping through the Hokuriku and Tohoku regions, was downgraded to an extratropical depression Thursday, the Meteorological Agency said.

As of noon Thursday, the storm was in the Pacific Ocean off Miyagi Prefecture, the agency said.

According to the National Police Agency, a total of 20 people were killed in six prefectures and seven people were missing as of 4 p.m. Thursday. About 4,200 houses were flooded up to floor level in 20 prefectures, and 26 of the houses were either destroyed or badly damaged.

The agency expected up to 100 millimeters of rain to fall on Tohoku's Pacific coast by noon Friday as the extratropical depression moved east.
