Miles Davis was once asked by a reporter what his favorite note was. Davis thought for a moment and coolly replied, "silence." Brazilian bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto seems to share this belief. He has perfected a singing style that is beyond intimacy, as soft as a purring kitten and as familiar as an old friend. Like his music, the man himself has led a life of dignified solitude, recording sporadically, rarely touring and refusing interviews. He is the Howard Hughes of song.
