HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Vern Ross today announced that three public tours of popular State Game Lands planned for October have been cancelled because of recent severe storm and flooding damage.
"It is not only very disappointing for those who planned to participate in these tours that we had to cancel them, but it also is very disappointing for the Game Commission employees who work so very hard to showcase their wildlife habitat work," Ross said. "These annual tours are their best chance to illustrate what they do to help wildlife and improve conditions for hunting and trapping."
Southeast Region Director Douglas Killough announced that the popular SGL 211 public tour planned for Oct. 17, was cancelled because of severe damage to the 17-mile-long road that stretches from Middle Paxton Township, Dauphin County, to Cold Spring Township, Lebanon County.
"Just about at the half-way point in the Yellow Springs area of Cold Spring Township, Lebanon County, there is a ditch about 10 feet wide and five to seven feet deep where the roadway was washed out during last week's flooding," Killough said. "Also, there is a seven-mile stretch of the old railroad bed where the top six to eight inches of road surface was removed by flooding water.
"The roadway is impassible, and there is no way we will be able to make the necessary repairs in time for the tour. We know that this will disappoint many people, as we annually have between 500 and 1,000 cars take part in this public tour. It's truly an unfortunate situation."
