Croatian police searched the homes, cars and offices of three people Thursday in an attempt to track down retired Gen. Ante Gotovina, wanted since 2001 by the U.N. war crimes tribunal for alleged atrocities, the Interior Ministry said.

The special forces carried out the searches "as part of our measures to locate ... Gotovina," ministry spokesman Zlatko Mehun said in a statement faxed to The Associated Press.

The owners of the searched properties were not identified. They are suspected of helping Gotovina evade authorities, the statement said. Mehun declined to give more details.
