Even the humble wristwatch has gone online. The digital watches shown here are the first products to use Microsoft's SPOT, or Smart Personal Objects Technology which pushes in formation to the watch over an FM radio network. The system's deliveries include news headlines, weather, stock quotes, instant messages, and Microsoft Outlook personal calendar appointments.
The SPOT technology might one day be useful. But our tests found the watches to be riddled with shortcomings:
The service is spotty. To receive data, you have to select coverage zones on the MSN Direct Web site. Our tests in the New York area uncovered dead spots within coverage zones.
