In June, computer chipmaker Intel introduced PCI Express, a faster set of motherboard chips that promise a significant boost in computer performance, especially for multimedia. Dell's new "cutting edge" Dimension 8400 is one of the first to use PCI Express. Ours cost us $1,748 and includes a Pentium 4 Processor 550 (3.4 gigahertz), a 160-gigabyte hard drive, 512 megabytes of RAM, and a 17-inch flat-panel monitor.
We saw improvements, but they were hardly significant. Overall, the 8400 was about 5 to 10 percent faster than the Gateway 510XL we top-rated in September.
