Interrupted Journeys: Young Refugees from Hitler's Reich, by Alan Gill; Simon & Schuster, 2004, $34.95.

THIS REMARKABLE BOOK plays a set of historical variations on the heart-strings. Some are heartwarming, others heart-breaking. Many contain elements of both emotions. The theme from which they emerge is given in the subtitle "Young Refugees from Hitler's Reich" but more specifically it refers to those escapees from the Nazis--the overwhelming majority of them Jewish--whose journey ended in Australia. I was one of them. The book is written by a distinguished journalist, not a dry fact-collecting historian, and with this topic is all the better for that.
