I FOR ONE had high expectations of the Australian tour of the famous American novelist James T. Farrell (1904-79), author of the 1930s Studs Lonigan trilogy. This was back in 1956 and he still represented Realism with a capital R. There was nothing false, genteel or cultivated about his Chicago Irish. They spoke about niggers, kikes and micks.
