SIR: Russell Blackford ("Liberty and Paternalism", June 2004) asserts that "compulsory seatbelt legislation is genuinely paternalistic". I was surprised. When the legislation was introduced, I thought that it was mainly for the benefit of the community. My impression was that the authorities were not so concerned to guard people against the consequences of their own actions, but that people's carelessness was putting unreasonable strain on rescue and repair facilities and personnel (both psychologically and economically).
