SIR: It is not often that one would dare to take issue with Sir Bruce Williams, one of the most respected and authoritative figures in Australian higher education administration.
Nonetheless, his article "Managerialism and the Vice-Chancellor" (June 2004) contains an inaccuracy which should not be left uncorrected, Amongst vice-chancellors who have "not had the support of their councils and resigned", he lists Professor Roger Holmes of the University of Newcastle, adding, "although there the Chancellor resigned with him".
It is quite misleading to suggest that the retirement of Professor Holies in October this year, or that of the previous Chancellor Mr Ric Charlton in April, is in any way related to the attitude of the University Council.
