We journalists tend to leap from one news item to an other, but must transition from yesterday's reports to today's, and what they may imply for tomorrow.
As editor, I tend to report the here-and-now, often with a request to "stay tuned." For readers who buttonhole me at conferences asking, "What's up with your daughter?" or "How are the cats?"--here's an update.
My sailing career
No, I haven't slept out on the sailboat yet. But then, I haven't tipped it over yet either. So far I have taken it out six times, four times with help, once alone in a light breeze and once with a non-sailing colleague. Why no overnight yet? I must be becoming mature, because on the night before my 60th birthday, when I was planning to camp out, several factors indicated it wasn't the best of ideas:
* The Stanley Cup final game on TV went into double overtime, so it was pitch black at 11 pm.
* The pier was about a foot underwater and slimy with algae due to heavy rains earlier and the lights were out.
* More rain was forecast for the night.
