Boys need sports more than girls do, according to a University of Virginia professor of public policy. Men are "more intrinsically attracted to sports--and need competition more than women do," explained Steven Rhoads, author of Taking Sex Differences Seriously.
Current Title IX regulations are "unjust," according to Rhoads. Due to their difficulty in making friends, boys need sports as connectors. He pointed to men's willingness to ride the bench in sports as evidence of this need. "[Riding the bench] allows them to connect with other men, a connection that's difficult for them to make apart from activities such as sports."
