After three successful pilot programs training 68 women to be better coaches and boost their chances of entering athletic administration, the Women Coaches Academy will now become an NCAA educational program.
Started as a pilot program in 2003 by Celia Slater and Mary Salerno to end the decline in women coaching women's college teams from 90% in 1972 to 44% now, the academy was a new program of the WinStar Foundation. It is a non-profit group providing leadership training and skills development for coaches and athletes.
The academy goes beyond skill training and covers management, marketing, networking, legal issues and career strategies, with a goal of recruiting and retaining more women in coaching and administration. It also provides role models and a support system.
