The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors has approved an emergency six-part plan that restricts the lavish perks that some schools give to recruit star athletes in football and basketball, beginning this fall.
"The idea is to minimize the focus on competition for the prospect," said Robert Hemenway, chair of the board and chancellor of the University of Kansas. "A number of people are concerned about the sense of entitlement on the part of some student-athletes, and the sense that there are certain perks that automatically come with being student-athletes. We don't think that should be a key part of the recruiting process."
The new emergency rules:
* Require CEO-approved rules for official visits that cover prospects, student hosts, coaches and other administrators that prohibit the use of alcohol, sex and gambling.
