Look, ma, the A's lead the American League in fielding percentage? That's right, the A's, described in Moneyball as a team "that would have started a blind man (in the field) if he had a talent for getting on base."

Defense, that old fundamental staple, is back in vogue--a welcome development, considering the recent obsession with on-base percentage, slugging percentage and all things offense.

The Red Sox, a team historically built on offense, salvaged their season by making a blockbuster trade to improve their defense. Other contenders didn't need to play catch-up.
