Know the best way to catch the attention of a prospective owner? Beat him at his own game.
That's exactly what Matt Crafton did to Kevin Harvick a year ago in the Craftsman Truck Series race at Bristol. Crafton knew Harvick was considering him as a candidate to drive Harvick's truck full time this season and figured if he beat Harvick at a track that has been one of Harvick's best, his chances would improve markedly.
Crafton did just that.
He qualified fifth, five spots better than Harvick, and finished sixth, four spots better than Harvick, who blew a tire while leading late in the race. Sure enough, Harvick called a few days later and offered Crafton the ride.
It was the big break Crafton had been seeking. At the end of 2003 he was coming off three full seasons with owner Duke Thorson and had failed to finish in the top five in 72 starts. His best points finish was 11th.
Fast forward to today, and Crafton, 28, is fourth in points and in contention for the series championship with Harvick's new operation.
"I'm ecstatic about it," Crafton says. "You can't ask for anything more--the best sponsor, a great team owner who gives you everything you want and good people to work with."
