When the Yankees reported for work last Wednesday, the opponent and start time for that night's game were not displayed in their usual spot on the stadium marquee. Instead was the old saying, "Winners Never Quit and Quitters Never Win."

It seems rather unusual that the mighty Yankees, who have won more titles than any team in American pro sports, have to be reminded of such a cliche. But after the embarrassment handed to them the night before--Indians 22, Yankees 0--perhaps George Steinbrenner could think of nothing better to do. After all, he did not fire the manager. He did not threaten his general manager in the tabloids. He did not even fume at reporters.
