S. KOREA'S Q1 CONSUMER SENTIMENT RISES: POLL

SEOUL - South Korean consumer sentiment rose above its benchmark level for the first quarter of this year, indicating a mild recovery in consumer spending, a private survey showed Thursday.

Samsung Economic Research Institute said its consumer confidence index rose to 51.2 in the first quarter, up 5.1 percentage point from a quarter earlier.

CHINA'S GUANGDONG PROVINCE EYES 9 PCT ECONOMIC GROWTH

BEIJING - South China's Guangdong Province is expecting 9 per cent year-on-year economic growth in the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-10), down from the previous 13 per cent annually.

Guangdong Governor Huang Huahua revealed the new target when delivering his government work report at the opening ceremony of this year's provincial people's congress yesterday.

HIGHER FOOD COSTS SEES CHINA'S CONSUMER PRICES RISE 1.9% IN JAN

BEIJING - Higher food costs caused China's consumer prices to rise 1.9 per cent year-on-year in January, figures from the National Bureau of Statistics indicate.

The consumer price index (CPI), a key inflation measurement, rose 2 per cent in urban areas and 1.7 per cent in rural areas, the bureau said yesterday.
