The Brussels silversmiths Pierre Gabriel Germain Dutalis (1755-1814) and his son Joseph Germain Dutalis thrived despite the political upheavals in the Netherlands and Belgium in the early nineteenth century. Having worked with his father for the Dutch royal family, the younger Dutalis undertook many commissions for the Belgian royal family following Belgium's independence from the Netherlands in 1830. Among the objects produced were tableware sets and fittings for the dressing table. He was also patronized by the church, guilds, and universities.
