East and West meet.(Brief Article)
The voyages of discovery launched at the end of the fifteenth century greatly extended Europeans' horizons. The most famous of the explorations was undertaken by Christopher Columbus in 1492, with the unfulfilled goal of finding a safe easterly route to Asia. Six years later the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama had more success, making landfall on the Malabar coast of India. This discovery inaugurated the golden age of trade between Europe and Asia. The Dutch established the Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), or Dutch East India Company. The British, too, extended their influence by establishing colonies in the East.
