After last season, I wasn't sure if I would play again. You never know what to expect when you come into a season, and Tim Brown and I talked about that. We said anything can happen. And it did, obviously, with Tim's release by the Raiders. But after talking with Norv Turner and Al Davis, I decided to come back for my 20th season.
I'm having fun with Norv's new offensive system. It's the type of system in which you can relax and let your natural ability take over.
When I came to the Raiders in 2001, Jon Gruden was head coach. His system was difficult. It was complex and caused a lot of tension. If you missed one word, you couldn't line up. When you're an athlete and you have to execute, you can't go to the line of scrimmage thinking about too many things.
With Norv and coordinator Jimmy Raye, it's simple. It's all based on a numbering system. Now I can break the huddle, and I don't have to exert so much energy thinking about, 'Maybe I'm right on this, maybe I'm wrong. I don't know what they expect" It's just the numbers. And it'll always start with the "X" route. I just line up, I get my split, and I'm ready to go. The game is fun again.
