A number of foreign banks are seeking to buy into Vietnam's largest joint stock bank - the Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank, or Sacombank, according to a senior Sacombank executive.

"Some foreign banks want to buy 10% of Sacombank's stake. They have worked with us many times but we have yet to choose the right partner. The negotiation process is still going", the bank's chairman, Dang Van Thanh said.

He declined to name those banks but a source told last week that Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and ANZ Bank were on the short list.
