Players seek to block merger Union chief Furuta: Still time to avert pro baseball's 1st strike

KOBE--Atsuya Furuta insisted Monday there was still time for owners to talk their way out of Japanese baseball's first ever strike, which is scheduled to start Saturday unless management agrees to hold off on merging the Osaka Kintetsu Buffaloes and Orix BlueWave for at least one more season.

Owners will meet Wednesday, when they are expected to formally approve the merger that will reduce Japanese pro baseball to fewer than 12 teams for the first time …
