Port of Spain, Trinidad: Emergency officials in the Eastern Caribbean, particularly Barbados and St Lucia, were meeting on Monday [6 September] morning as Ivan, a category three hurricane approached the islands.

The 8 a.m. AST bulletin issued by the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said that the centre of Hurricane Ivan, the fourth major storm this season, was located near latitude 11.1 north, longitude 52.6 west or about 485 miles east-southeast of Barbados.

It said that Ivan was moving towards the west near 23 mph and a westward to west-northwestward motion is expected …
