Afghan Defence Ministry calls for disarmament ahead of elections.

The Defence Ministry has instructed all military units to join the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration [DDR] programme ahead of the elections by the set date, otherwise they will be disbanded.

Speaking at a press conference today, the Defence Ministry spokesman, Gen Mohammad Zaher Azimi, said: According to the agreement reached with the commanders, if DDR is not implemented ahead of the elections as scheduled, they will not receive their salaries, food and supplies in accordance with the decree issued by the head of state and will not be permitted to assemble in military centres.
