Is deja vu extra-sensory?" ET asked last week. Now consider more mundane explanations, which fall into four categories. The first involves theories of dual processing.

Scientists say effective perception depends on seamless working of memory "retrieval" and "familiarity". When familiarity runs ahead of retrieval, deja vu might occur. A variant theory points at discord between the two circuits due to fatigue or stress.
