[1] What to watch for at Daytona
The Great American Race will feature 500 miles, 200 laps, 800 left turns, and ...
Tony Stewart will win. His dominance of the Pepsi 400 at Daytona last summer would have been legendary had his emotional win at the Brickyard not overshadowed it. Of 363 laps in two races at Daytona last year, he led a staggering 254.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon will be strong. But don't mistake that as proof either has solved his problems from last season. A restrictor-plate car is as different from an intermediate car as a fastball is from a knuckleball. So unless they got their knucklers working in the offseason, they'll both still be up against it after Daytona. The next three races--at California, Las Vegas and Atlanta--will be more revealing.
The controversy surrounding bump drafting will continue. Bump drafting is a technique in which you help the guy in front of you move up by ramming his rear bumper. It's considered acceptable until you make the guy crash. Which always happens at some point--and will on Sunday.--Matt Crossman
