Elementary Rudiments of Music was intended to be used in conjunction with the Theory Syllabus of the Royal Conservatory of Music of Toronto in preparation for examinations. In effect, it is a well-organized and detailed resource directory of the basic music elements found from the common practice period onward.
Each chapter emphasizes one particular aspect: notation, major and minor scales, other scales and modes, chords, time and so forth. Of particular interest are the chapters on transposition and score types. At the end there is a comprehensive dictionary of terms and forms.
