TAIPEI, Sept 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan is expected to play a leading role in the global public wireless local area networking (WLAN) market thanks to its strong manufacturing clout and full government support, an industry expert said Tuesday.
Wu Chen-sheng, general manager of the Nortel Network in Taiwan, made the analysis while giving a keynote speech at an international seminar on the prospects for the wireless telecommunications industry.
Citing research statistics, Wu reported that the country's telecommunications industry ranks as the world's 6th most competitive on the back of various key factors that place Taiwan in ninth spot globally in terms of digital penetration index and in second spot in terms of the fast-growing telecommunications volume.
In addition, Wu said, Taiwan enjoys the world's No. 1 cellular phone ownership rate of 113 percent and the world's fourth highest broadband penetration rate of 9.4 percent.
