Where there's Muck...
SCOTTISH transport minister Nicol Stephen was on hand yesterday for the opening of new terminals at Muck, Rum and Eigg, which are expected to boost transport services to the Hebridean islands.
The islands are served by ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne using the GBP7m ($1.8m) Lochnevis which was built at Ailsa Shipbuilding in Troon in 2000.
CalMac can now provide direct car and passenger access to the islands from Mallaig.
They were previously served by the Lochmor, which had to be met at each island by a flit boat onto which passengers were transferred.
CalMac chairman Dr Harold Mills was on hand for the celebrations, saying that 'having a modern ship of this kind obviously has implications for the supporting infrastructure and landing facilities. I am delighted that we have now reached this advanced stage of the development which presented major challenges in engineering and environmental terms'.
